Winter Moon

Posted by Eric Cousineau (Sherwood Park, Canada) on 15 January 2010 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

8:29 AM - As we await the first rays of dawn to paint the tops of the mountains we enjoy the winter moon.

Curly from South Shields, United Kingdom

Damned difficult to get a good moon, perhaps this is just slightly over exposed, I'm also looking at Payam's today and there is a world of difference between the two shots. Of course I have no way of knowing what the weather conditions were I either location, but it does illustrate how differently modern cameras handle the brightest light in the night sky, when we allow them to.

15 Jan 2010 1:24pm

@Curly: Thank you Curly! My guess is that atmospheric conditions greatly affect the quantity and quality of light that reach the earth. One critical factor is the amount of moisture in the air as this changes the prismatic diffusion of the light. On this particular morning it was brutally cold (-38C excluding wind chill) and relative humidity probably less than 10%. ;-)

Good evening Eric,
They had great skill and patience to make this recording. It's great and unique, look at it. They have masterfully presented it. To view this moon reminds me of a little poem which I learned as a child. Perhaps you know it? <It goes as follows: The moon is round, the moon is round, he has two eyes, nose and mouth.> I wish you a pleasant evening, health and much success and joy with your images. I thank you very much for
your always nice comments, even today. Your blog, I am very happy to visit. Dear greetings Christel
