St Nicholas

Posted by
Eric Cousineau (Sherwood Park, Canada) on 4 December 2011 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.

Saint Nicholas of Myra is the primary inspiration for the Christian figure of Sinterklaas. He was a 4th century Greek Christian bishop of Myra (now Demre) in Lycia, a province of the Byzantine Anatolia, now in Turkey.

Nicholas was famous for his generous gifts to the poor, in particular presenting the three impoverished daughters of a pious Christian with dowries so that they would not have to become prostitutes. He was very religious from an early age and devoted his life entirely to Christianity. In Europe (more precisely the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Germany) he is still portrayed as a bearded bishop in canonical robes

Benjamin Franklin

I don't think of myself as a role model. I do try to live in a compassionate, considerate and positive way. The only advice I can offer is to find what you love to do, find the joy in it, and express yourself through your passion.

Japanalia from Yokohama, Japan

The face of a bonhomme and the clothes of a rich old man! It is very well done and meant to be attractive. In my homecountry, St.Nicholas - celebrated on December 6th - is one thing AND Father Christmas is another thing, but both love children and are supposed to bring presents for them if they behaved themselves.

franz from Baden, Austria

oh yes, we know "nikolaus" well here ... he and his nasty companion, "krampus", come on the evening of december 5 to reward the good children and to punish the naughty ... although the latter has more or less stopped, following modern psychological thinking. i can well remember how we would hide under our beds when krampus was rattling his chains and threatening to take us with him in the tub he was wearing on his back ...

4 Dec 2011 7:37pm

@franz: Thank you very much Franz! This St Nicholas is a much kinder version! ;-)
