Grandfather Frost

Posted by
Eric Cousineau (Sherwood Park, Canada) on 11 December 2011 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.

These wonderful carved Santa figurines come from Central Russia; mainly from the traditional art and craft villages surrounding Moscow. Some of these villages have centuries of wood-crafting tradition. Each Santa is individually handcrafted. Usually the carving and the painting are done by two different artists these are highly specialized skills. Some Santas are produced in small cooperatives with several artists working together to produce a quantity of pieces of the same design. Others are signed, one-of-a-kind art pieces produced by artists working independently in their own homes.

In Russia, Santa Claus in known as Grandfather Frost who is the spirit of winter and popular charactr in many Russian fairy tales. He is often depicted with his Granddaughter, the Snowmaiden, a pretty young girl usually dressed in blue. Frequently, the Snowmaiden is accompanied by rabbits, birds, or other forest animals.
