@Riccardo: Thank you very much Riccardo! Yes, I imagine that would be one of the perks of living there! ;-)

Ronnie 2¢ from Atlantic Shores, United Kingdom

Our excuse for making folks live in blocks like those was that that we had too little space to house them otherwise - not true, but that was the excuse. I wonder what the argument was in Canada !

11 Jun 2012 7:33am

@Ronnie 2¢: Thank you very much Ronnie! The stadium and the highrise houseing was erected for the Commonwealth Games in 1978! The buildings were used for athlete dormitories and later convered to rental appartments! ;-)

Curly from South Shields, United Kingdom

Do they get much rain here Eric?
Wonder why the stadium is open to the elements?

11 Jun 2012 9:04am

@Curly: Thank you very much Curly! No we don't get much rain here as we are a desert climate! The stadium was built for the 1978 Commonwealth Games and if I am not mistaken this was a requirement back then! Anyway we are a hardy lot and it takes more than a bit or rain or snow to keep us away! ;-))

Stephen from Canberra, Australia

Very interesting point of view, Eric, with this little patch of wilderness in the foreground.

11 Jun 2012 10:07am

@Stephen: Thank you very much Stephen! Yes, this is part of the river valley which is part of the park land that runs along side the North Saskatchewan river that runs through Edmonton! ;-)

tataray from france, France

Quel contraste, avec ces bâtiments immenses et cette terre abandonnée en avant-plan.))

11 Jun 2012 12:12pm

@tataray: Merci Raymonde beaucoup!

Viewfinder from Bradenton, FL, United States

I like the vegetation/trees and all in the foreground. The folks dwelling in those high apartments look as if they almost get a bird's eye view of whatever game is going on, I suppose an added perk for living there. Heh.

11 Jun 2012 1:56pm

@Viewfinder: Thank you very much Glenn! The natural space you see in the foreground is part of the river valley system. The city of Edmonton is divided by the North Saskatchewan river. The North Saskatchewan River valley parks system is a continuous collection of urban parks in the North Saskatchewan River valley of Edmonton, Alberta.

Edmonton's river valley comprises over 20 major parks and attractions and forms the largest expanses of urban parkland in North America. Referred to as a "Ribbon of Green", the public river valley parks provide a unique urban escape area with park styles ranging from fully serviced urban parks to campsite-like facilities with few amenities. At 7,400 ha (18,000 acres) in size and 48 km (30 mi) in length, the river valley parks system consists of 22 ravines, which have a combined total length of 103 km (64 mi).

Those apartments were built along with the stadium as athlete dormitories for the 1978 Commonwealth Games. Later they were converted into rental units, that on one side anyway, have a room with a view! ;-)
