Ice Chest

Posted by
Eric Cousineau (Sherwood Park, Canada) on 11 September 2012 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.

An icebox is a compact non-mechanical refrigerator which was a common kitchen appliance before the development of safe powered refrigeration devices. Iceboxes had hollow walls that were lined with tin or zinc and packed with various insulating materials such as cork, sawdust, straw or seaweed. A large block of ice was held in a tray or compartment near the top of the box. Cold air circulated down and around storage compartments in the lower section. Some finer models had spigots for draining ice water from a catch pan or holding tank. In cheaper models a drip pan was placed under the box and had to be emptied at least daily. The user had to replenish the melted ice, normally by obtaining new ice from an iceman.

I don't think of myself as a role model. I do try to live in a compassionate, considerate and positive way. The only advice I can offer is to find what you love to do, find the joy in it, and express yourself through your passion.

We had an old ice chest similar to this on the farm. It was unused when I saw it and had been moved to the tool shed.

My grandmother used to talk about their old "icebox" and in fact called her old Kelvinator refrigerator the "ice box" (much to my childish amusement). This would be something great to have now on the back screen porch or lanai, instead of those garish blue and white plastic portable ice chests.
